In this paper, we attempted to clarify the reason why the Tohoku region has a high land rent today. To do so, we analyzed the relationship between the agricultural structure and the local labor market in Omonogawa, Akita Prefecture.
As a result, we found that the elderly do not receive enough pension and have little chance of finding a job in the labor market. Therefore, they maintain their own farms until they reach their physical limits, which results in a high land rent in this region.
