A bioinspired process was employed to control over morphology of TiO
2 films in solutions. By controlling the solution conditions, either pH, temperature or additives, we could regulate the crystallization behavior, so as a various of morphologies could be obtained. The film surface, cross section and crystalline phases were characterized. Our studies show that the optimizing of morphology through such an environmental-benign way is promising to be extended to other materials systems.

Niobium oxide thin films were prepared by sol-gel methods. These films are important materials for the metal insulator metal (MIM) capacitor of giga-bit dynamic random access memory (DRAM). Niobium chloride, which is low cost material, was used as a starting material. And all process carried out in the air atmasphere. The crystalline and transparaent niobium oxide films could be obtained at the sintered temperature of 600 degree centigrade.

A beer degradation prevention film has been investigated. SiO2 or ZrO2 films containing inorganic pigment were prepared on the beer bottle surface by the sol-gel method. By heat-treating those films, the thin films have strength against washing by alkali solution (alkali-resistance) and high peel-strength. The film has high transparency and alkali-resistance. The film absorbs light in the range of 450-520nm wavelength and prevents a beer from photo-degradation.

The bioactivity was generated for titanium by anodic oxidation over spark discharge voltage, and was remarkably increased by the addition of HAp particles in the electrolytic bath. The activity was also influenced by the preparation condition such as maximum voltage, current during anodization.

Diamond films were synthesized under atmospheric pressure using the modified plasma CVD method above the liquid surface which we had previously developed. Self-standing diamond films with the thickness of 10 m were synthesized from 80 mol% ethylene glycol aqueous solution. The films showed the transparency with the high crystallinity indicated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy.Diamond films were synthesized under atmospheric pressure using the modified plasma CVD method above the liquid surface which we had previously developed. The effect of sintering process on dielectric loss and thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics was explored. Y2O3 was added as a sintering additive to AlN powder and pressureless sintering was performed at 1900˚C for 2 h in a flowing nitrogen atmosphere. Following sintering, slow cooling and/or annealing were performed. Dielectric loss and thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics will be reported.

2] sheets of Bi

9, was intercalated with alkylamines (C
nH
2n+1NH
2,
n = 4,5,7,8,12,14,16,18) in non-aqueous solutions. By carefully choosing the reaction media and reactant ratios, the organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures with controllable morphologies could be achieved, and the corresponding tungsten oxide nanocrystals were obtained by decomposing the organic species at elevated temperature or in concentrated nitric acid. The proposed approach is characteristic of high efficiency and low cost.

We report the temperature-dependent properties of ferroelectric thin films such as PZT and BZT. The large-signal field-induced strain from the macroscopic capacitor top electrode/ferroelectric film/bottom electrode, and small-signal microscopic PZT or BZT capacitor consisting with probe microscopy tip/PZT or BZT/bottom electrodes. 1μm-thick PZT films on were prepared from Inostek chemical solution. 0.5μm-thick Ba(Zr
0.2Ti
0.8)O
3 (BZT) thin films were prepared on by chemical solution deposition. Measurements of the temperature large-signal electric-field-induced displacements of the films were performed using a combination of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and a ferroelectric tester. Small-signal measurements were performed using a combination of SPM and a lock-in amplifier. For the temperature-dependent displacement measurement, a stage with a heater and thermocouples were employed. The temperature dependence of large-signal displacement loops of the BZT thin films at -100°C, 20°C and 100°C are measured. And the averaged piezoresponse signal at various temperatures are also measured. At 20°C, piezoresponse signal is most intense. The lower signal at 100°C is due to loss of ferroeletricity, and lower signal at -100°C is partly due to the effect of contraction of ferroelectric domains.
