We propose a novel process to fabricate micropatterns of spherical particle assemblies. Hydrophilic regions of a patterned self-assembled monolayer were covered with methanol solution containing SiO2 particles and immersed in decalin to control the shape of droplets and gradually dissolve the methanol into decalin. Interfacing of methanol/decalin and shrinkage of methanol droplets were utilized to obtain meniscus force to form spherical particle assemblies; additionally, its static solution system allowed precise control of the conditions. Particles were assembled to form spherical shapes on hydrophilic regions of an SAM and consequently, micropatterns of spherical particle assemblies were successfully fabricated through self-assembly. This patterned two-solution process has the advantages of both a drying process having meniscus force and a static solution process having high controllability.

Evaluation of chemical durability of glass containing lead will be very important in finding a suitable method for its disposal in future. Minute leaching test is needed for the evaluation of the long-term chemical durability of the glass containing Pb which is supposed to be exposed in different kinds of environments. In this study, we investigated leaching behavior of 7.3Na2-6.4K2O-3.7MgO-5.4CaO-66.4SiO2-7.8PbO-3Al2O3(mol%) under a few different pH. Surface of the leached glass was examined by optical microscope and SEM.

Hydroxyapatite is ideal as the main mineral of bones and teeth. Artificially synthesized hydroxyapatite has been extensively used in a variety of applications, such as biomaterials, ion exchangers, adsorbents, and catalysts by exploiting its biocompatibility and adsorbability with many compounds. In this presentation, the conditions for the preparation of transparent block consisting of low crystallized hydroxyapatite and the cell adhesion property of the block will be reported. The hydroxyapatite transparent block should be useful for cell culture substrates because the cells adhered on the hydroxyapatite transparent block can be directly observed with an optical microscope without any pretreatments.

A bone-like apatite layer formed on a hydroxyapatite by a coprecipitation reaction reaction with a deposition of bone-like apatite and an adsorption of serum protein improved a cell growth. In this study, effects of serum protein adsorption to substrates on the formation of bone-like apatite layer and the cell response were investigated. The formation of bone-like apatite layer on a strontium-substituted apatite was confirmed, and then the cell growth on the layer was improved. Accordingly, a difference of protein adsorption to substrate had not appeared to the effect of bone-like apatite layer on the cell growth.

Four kinds of mesoporous silicates (MSPs) were prepared according to the standard methods; using by triblock copolymer P123 and silica source TEOS. Also, KCl and decane were used to control the pore size and diameter of MPSs. The cytotoxicology of the MPSs was tested with the co-culture of various concentration of MPSs and osteoblastic cell MC3T3-E1 Cell. The cell number was counted by the measurement of oxide-reductase of the cell. The amino-substituted MSPs showed high toxicity with low concentration of the nano-particle (0.1 mg /ml).

Wettability is an important property of solid surfaces and is a characteristic property of materials. In this work, molecular orbital calculations were used to determine the energy and structural change of water molecular vs their distance to typical model surface of hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon coatings. C13H22 and C13F22 clusters were used for the typical surface and water molecule was placed on the center of the substrate. The distance of water molecule was set to be 1.0-4.0 A. Under 2.0 A, the energy change of C13F22 cluster is larger than that of C13H22 cluster. Over 2.0 A, there is slight difference between C13H22 cluster and C13F22 cluster on the residual energy change. As a result, the interaction of water/fluorocarbon was larger than that of water/hydrocarbon.

Li4SiO4 with various particle sizes were synthesized at various temperatures by solid state method. Reaction rate constant was estimated by measurement on CO2 absorption by thermogravimetry. A tendency was found that the reaction rate of the samples with small particle size is larger than that of the samples with larger particle size in the case of same measurement temperature. It was found by Arrhenius plot that the reaction rate drastically increased when measurement temperature was over melting temperature of Li2CO3 in samples.

Electrode material properties of BCN compound derived from melamine diborate have been investigated. The volume resistivity of the BCN compact, which was molded by the uniaxial pressing, was around 0.26ohmm. The electrical resistance was 1/4500 times smaller than that of the crystallite, and slightly depend on the temperature. Since the BCN compound obtained in this study have turbostratic structure, it is considered that the electrical resistance of b-c plane and a-axis direction was greatly different. In molding the BCN compound to be a thin electrode, the intercalation of the Li
+ in organic solvent was examined by the voltage sweep. It is confirmed that the insertion of Li
+ into the layer occurred around 0.2-0.4V.

LiFePO4 was synthesized by solid-state reaction method using various starting materials.LiFePO4 with higher capacity was obtained when FeC4H2O4 or FeC2O4:2H2O was used as a source of Fe because carbon might be dispersed well in LiFePO4 powder and suppress the formation of Fe3+ effectively.

Environmental friendly beta-FeSi
2 and the substituted powders (B for Si and Mn or Co for Fe) were prepared by heating in vacuum, and the bulk samples were prepared by hydrothermal HIP. The samples were evaluated by the thermoelectric properties. B-substitution made electrical conduction increase below 400C. As Mn or Co was substituted, transition from alpha to beta phase became hard to occur. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficients depended on the annealing period, and it is suggested that the thermoelectric properties was affected by the amount of beta phase in the sintered bodies.
