Recently, there are many reports of ultrasonic motors using lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with relatively high piezoelectric strain constant d
33. However, ultrasonic motors using bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics (BLSFs) with small d
33 have not been reported yet. In this study, we attempted to demonstrate ultrasonic motors using one of the BLSF ceramics, (Sr

18. As a result, rotation of the rotor is confirmed, and the rotational speed of 300 rpm at the center frequency was observed. In addition, the temperature rise under the continuous driving at room temperature was about 20%. And, the frequency variation from the center frequency was very small of about 0.02%.

The solid solution Bi(Fe1/4Ni3/8Ti3/8)O3-BaTiO3 system was prepared by conventional high temperature reaction. The single phase of perovskite-type compounds was obtained in the range of x=0.5 and its X-ray powder diffraction pattern was indexed with the pseudo-cubic cell. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant for x = 0.5 showed a broad peak at about 350C.

LiCoO
2, which has layered rock-salt structure, is used as positive electrode material for Li-ion batteries. In this study we attempt to produce crystalline-oriented LiCoO
2 by slip casting in a strong magnetic field. And we analyzed the relationship between the grain growth and the crystal orientation. As a result, it was revealed that the grain growth was suppressed by the crystal orientation.

CNT-dispersed Si
3N
4 ceramics were fabricated by bead milling and by adding HfO
2 as a sintering aid for lower temperature densification. As a result, the samples by adding HfO
2 fired at lower temperatures showed higher bending strength and higher electrical conductivity because HfO
2 promoted the densification of Si
3N
4 and prevented CNT from disappearance. CNT-dispersed Si
3N
4 ceramics prepared by bead milling indicated higher bending strength than those by ball milling because of pulverization of agglomerations of CNTs by bead milling.

(Bi,Pr)(Fe,Mn)O3 (BPFM)/B-doped diamond layered structure was fabricated on a (111) diamond substrate. B-doped diamond films were homoepitaxially grown on (111) diamond substrate using MPCVD. Then, BPFM thin films were deposited on the B-doped diamond layer by PLD. BPFM thin films were polycrystalline with random orientations on the B-doped diamond layer. Fabricated layered structure showed saturated P-E hysteresis curves with 2Pr: 90C/cm2 and 2Ec: 740kV/cm for maximum electric field of 900kV/cm at room temperature. P-E hysteresis curves without influences of leakage current were observed even when the measurement temperature was increased to 170 ˚C.

The property of ceramics is governed by the internal structures of sintered body. Irregular structures of ceramics as local low density, coarse grains, defects, and cracks are the main factors which affect the strength of ceramics. Usually they are caused by coarse particles, agglomerate, granule parking etc. For example, after sintering, coarse particles change into coarse grains, agglomerates change into a kind of defect and cause the local low density. Granule interstice change into cracks and also cause the local low density. This study focuses on the internal structure between green bodies and sintered bodies, and the relationship between the irregular structure and corresponding cause will be verified through the microscope observation.

The sintering of two spherical particles was analyzed in terms of mechanics for coupled grain boundary/surface diffusion. The shrinkage is a result of relative motion of particles caused by grain boundary diffusion. The center of mass of a particle also moves due to the spheroidization of particles by surface diffusion. The mobility and the sintering force for both processes were calculated in sintering of two identical particles till they reach the equilibrium. The contribution of the grain boundary diffusion to the final shrinkage increased with increasing the ratio of grain boundary diffusion coefficient to surface diffusion coefficient and the ratio of grain boundary energy to surface energy.

The feasibility of fabrication aluminum nitride coating through plasma nitriding of Al
2O
3 powder in N
2/H
2 plasma was investigated. Cubic-AlN (
c-AlN)/Al
2O
3 composite coating was fabricated and it contains
c-AlN, alpha- Al
2O
3, Al
5O
6N and gama- Al
2O
3. The particles melted, spheroidized and reacted in the plasma and formed aluminum oxynitride (AlON). The particles collide, flatten, and the AlON is easily nitride to
c-AlN(same cubic symmetry). The
c-AlN was formed by rapid solidification of AlON and plasma irradiation on the substrate. The high quenching rate of the plasma flame prevents AlN crystal growth to form the hexagonal phase. The in-flight reaction enhanced the AlN content.
