Computer simulation of the neural model suggests that the increment threshold with which the two separate dots are perceived is elevated only when dot separation is less than the diameter of the receptive field center. The implication was tested and confirmed in Experiment I; the critical separation of the dots increased linearly with retinal eccentricity and was almost equal to the diameter of the receptive field center. In Experiment II, the increment threshold was measured for the test spot flanked on both sides at various distance by lines with suprathreshold luminance. The result showed that the diameter of the inhibition field increased monotonically with increasing eccentricity and that it was about 2.9 times as large as the diameter of the receptive field center. The results of both experiments are discussed in terms of Y-cells in human visual system.

The effect of presentation modality on text memory was investigated by manipulating the difficulty level of text content. An easy and a difficult texts, which were almost equal in length, were presented in one of three modalities (auditory, visual, and audiovisual) and remembered. Free recall was used and recall protocols were scored for 20 idea units. The results showed a modality effect, that is, the superiority of auditory over visual and audiovisual presentation in recall performance. Auditory superiority, however, was found for the difficult text only, and was not restricted to the recency part. These results cannot be explained by the precategorical store hypothesis which is a widespread interpretation of the modality effect on word-list memory. Instead, one possibility was suggested in terms of capacity shortage owing to the translation of printed letters into an auditory form which impaires the processing of the difficult text.

Three experiments explored the collateral behaviors of rats under the differential reinforcement of long running-time schedule (DRLR) in a 6-segmented straight alley. In Experiment 1 and 2, three groups were used. DRLR was applied to parts of the alley, i. e. first 4 (Anterior), middle 4 (Middle), or last 4 (Posterior) segments of the alley for the respective groups. Anterior group developed the highest degree of collateral behaviors, followed by those of Posterior group, while the collateral behaviors of the Middle group progressively decreased with training. In Experiment 3, three groups of rats were given continuously reinforced trials (0,20 or 80 trials) followed by DRLR training. Result showed that the region along the alley where collateral behaviors were seen was related to the amount of continuously reinforced trials received. Taken together, findings of this study are incompatible with the "adventitious reinforcement" or "interim behavior" interpretation, and suggest that rats did not learned a collateral behavior per se but rather a response chain as a whole.

The development of contrast sensitivity function (CSF) in human infants is discussed in terms of the maturation of X-and Y-cells in the primary visual system. A qualitative change in CSF takes place around the second postnatal month, and results from recent developmental studies in human infants and kittens suggest that this discontinuity reflects development within the primary visual system, especially a rapid maturation of X-cells, instead of the shift of dominant processing role from superior colliculus to the primary visual system, has been suggested by several authors. The other problem discussed is the discrepancy between the developmental process of human acuity reported by behavioral studies and that reported by visually-evoked-potential studies. To resolve the issue, human and cat data at both of the behavioral and cellular levels were considered. This suggested that human acuity development is more likely to take place during the 3-5 years period after birth as indicated by the behavioral studies rather than the 6 month period suggested by the VEP studies.
