The contact between Europe and China in the early modern period began in the Mongolian Period. In this period the European influence in China was less significant because the level of European science itself was not much higher than that of China. It has been said that Europe was restored to the level of the Greek science only in the 15th century. During that century, however, Europe achieved a remarkable development in politics and economics, especially in Portugal and Spain which made successful advance into the new world. Portugal opened the sea route to India by way of the Cape of Good Hope, and after advancing into China, occupied Macao. The Spaniard went westward and occupied both the northern and southern continents of America. They moved further to the west across the Pacific and, after occupying the Philippines, engaged in the trade with China.
