Soiling of various fabrics and effect of builders on preventing soil redeposition were investigated with three kinds of soils : (carbon black, mixture of carbon black and clay, and the liquid used to clean artificially soiled fabrics.)
The fabrics tested were Cotton, Rayon, Polyester, Nylon, and Polypropylene. The builders were CMC, PVA, PVP (K-30), PVP (K-90), and HEC.
Main results obtained were as follows :
1) The ways in which different kinds of fabrics are soiled varied according to different kinds of soils. The effects of different builders on each fabric were different also according to each kind of soil.
2) The fabrics tested were easily soiled by carbon black and the mixture of carbon black and clay in the following order : Polyester-Nylon-Polypropylene. This order varied when they were tested with the liquid used to clean artificially soiled fabrics to Nylon-Polypropylene-Polyester.
3) The effects of PVA and PVP (K-30) on preventing soil redeposition were quite satisfactory for each fabric.
4) The similar effects were observed with PVP (K-90) and HEC for hydrophobic fabrics such as Polyester, Nylon and Polypropylene, but little effect were seen for hydrophilic fabrics such as Cotton and Rayon.
