In this work, the optimum shape of the magnetic pole on an electromagnetic damper is determined by an optimization technique taking a serious view of a compact design. The Lagrange multipliers method was used for the optimization technique
(9). Firstly, damping coefficients were evaluated by the distribution of eddy currents occurred in the conducting slab. The distribution of eddy currents was calculated by the boundary element method combined with the finite element method. Secondly, each optimum shape of magnetic pole under several conditions was obtained by the optimization technique. Thirdly, each optimum pole shape was verified experimentally by comparison between the experimental value of the damping coefficient and the objective value.
