A new, and the third, catabolic pathway of D-glucosamine (GlcN) was found in
Agrobacterium radiobacter (IFO 12665). The crude extract of
A. radiobacter had NADH-dependent GlcN reductase activity, NAD
+-dependent D-glucosaminitol (GlcNOH) dehydrogenase activity, and 3-keto-glucosaminitol aldolase activity. The products of these steps were confirmed as GlcNOH (by TLC), 3-keto-GlcNOH (by IR and TLC), pyruvate (by TLC and LDH), and glyceraldehyde (by TLC), respectively. Thus, the new catabolic pathway of GlcN is as follows: D-glucosamine→D-glucosaminitol→3-keto-D-glucosaminitol→pyruvate+glyceraldehyde+ammonia. The distribution of and physiological importance of the pathway are not known.
