The results obtained from a medical survey of the hot spring curative treatment at Hijiori Spa in Yamagata Prefecture, and from the experiments on the effect of successive drinking of this hot spring water on the secretion of gastric juice and on the effect of hot spring bathing on the healing of wounds and burns, are summarized as follows:
1) The greater number of spa visitors are inhabitants of Yamagata Prefecture, the majority being farmers. Most of them are the old men and women being about equal in number.
2) Considering the fact that more than half of the spa visitors have come here for therapeutic or convalescing purpose, this spa may be said to be a spa whose sole object is the hot spring curative treatment.
3) An examination of visitors for diseases reveals the fact that neuralgia and rheumatism stand at the top of the list, while the diseases of the digestive organs and wounds occupy the largest number among those who visit our office for consultation. This clearly shows the reason why this spa is called “the hot spring for digestive organ” or “the hot spring for wounds”.
4) In spite of the fact that many of the visitors have been there more than two times, very few come to the spa under the direction of a doctor. In addition, the proper method of bathing is not in practice at this spa and the hot spring visitors at the spa tend to bathe to excess in a short period of their stay at the hot spring, which results in frequent occurence of bath reaction among the visitors. It is, therefore, desirable that they bathe under proper directions of doctors.
5) The practice of successive drinking of this hot spring water among patients with stomach disorders results in improvement in acid symptoms in most cases. Of these, two cases show the recovery to the normal acidity, suggesting that this spa accelerates the recovery to the normal acidity of gastric juice.
6) Observations of variations in curative coefficient and histo-pathological changes in the rabbits in which wounds and burns were made experimentally leads to a conclusion that this spa has favorable effect on the healing of wounds and burns.
