Plinio dice che il vestito tinto con la porpora, ottenuta dalla sostanza dei molluschi (murex o purpura) che vivono lungo la costa mediterranea orientale, era molto apprezzato dagli imperatori nell'antichita romana. Pero nel Medioevo, questa tintura che richiedeva tempo e denaro, era andata gradualmente declinando eccetto che a Costantinopoli e a Palermo, per poi scomparire definitivamente nel 1453 quando l'impero cadde in mano ai Turchi. Infatti, alcuni manuali di tintoria del Quattro e Cinquecento (come il Trattato dell'arte della seta edito da Girolamo Gargiolli, il manoscritto 4.4.1. della Civica Biblioteca di Como, e il Plictho di Giovan Ventura Rosetti ecc.) e la Pratica della mercatura (ca. 1310-1340) di Francesco Balducci Pegolotti non menzionano neppure la porpora. Nonostante tutto, la passione della gente per il era rimasta invariata. Molte pagine dei suddetti manuali erano dedicate alla tintura delle diverse tonalita del : rosato, paonozzo, scarlatto, chermisi, sanguigno, cardinalesco, ecc. E riferiscono che per ottenere questi colori, si usavano il chermes o la grana, insetti parassiti delle quercie, la robbia e il verzino dell'Asia sud-orientale al posto della porpora. Anche queste sostanze coloranti erano generalmente molto costose. I vestiti tinti di in questo modo erano piu preziosi di quelli di altri colori, percio erano indossati principalmente dai nobili ricchi. Ad esempio, nell'inventario di Puccio Pucci, che faceva parte della cerchi di Cosimo de'Medici, redatto nel 1449, c'erano molti vestiti sui toni del . Ed anche i medici e gli intellettuali che anelavano al potere politico e finanziario dei nobili, preferivano questo colore. Il Boccaccio descrive in tono vivace i giudici, i medici e i notai, con <<gli scarlatti>>, che da Bologna tornano a Firenze (Decameron, VIII9). Nelle opere letterarie allegoriche, in cui spesso i colori dei vestiti dei personaggi hanno un ruolo importante, il e tradizionalmente il colore dell'abito della persona simboleggiante la carita (p.e. Purgatorio, XXIX, vv. 122-23). Ma nel Trecento, alcuni autori come Francesco da Barberino danno a questo colore qualche nuovo significato- l'industria, la discrezione, la fortezza, ecc.-, senza badare troppo alla tradizione. Secondo Le Blason des couleurs di Sicille (ca. 1458), uno dei trattati sui colori del basso Medioevo, che ci mostra molti dei loro significati simbolici, it (vermeil) significa Haultesse, Hardiesse, Sanguin, Feu, Este, ecc., ed e considerato come il colore primo e piu importante. Fino a quando il nero sara esaltato dagli uomini di Stato, dai moralisti o da qualche letterato nel Cinquecento, il dominera come "re" dei colori.Il , che era un colore "basso" dal punto di vista morale fino alla meta del Medioevo, avera poi ereditato le porprieta del color propora -la nobilta, il potere, la ricchezza, ecc.-, ed era stato nobilitato. Si puo dire, senza paura di esagerare, che la tecnica della tintura del aveva fatto passi da gigante e che erano state inventate tante tonalita perche sia i produttori che i consumatori avevano nostalgia del color porpora, che era molto ricercato nell'antichita.

We present a new model to interpret the asymmetry of the Electron Spin Resonance spectrum observed at low temperature and high microwave frequency, in phosphorus doped silicon in the concentration region 2×10¹⁷cm⁻³ to 10¹⁸cm⁻³. This model is based upon the distinction between isolated and strongly coupled donors. The exchange energy that determines this separation is one order of magnitude larger than the hyperfine interaction between the electron and the nucleus of the donor. Strongly coupled donors constitute clusters: Interactions between these clusters and isolated donors are of the same order of magnitude or smaller than the hyperfine coupling, and cause the spectrum to be asymmetric when the electronic polarization is large. We are able to perform a complete Monte Carlo calculation of the donors distribution and to determine the resulting spectrum for a concentration 2×10¹⁷cm⁻³: The result is in good agreement with the experimental curve.

The peak shift of the central ESR line of P-doped Si has been measured at 46 GHz as a function of temperature in the range from 0.56 K to 4.2 K and donor concentration in the range from 3.1×10¹⁷ cm⁻³ to 1.8×10¹⁸ cm⁻³. The results are discussed in terms of model.

Questa fase letteraria di Nedda corrisponde esattamente allo stato in sospeso della psicologia verghiana di fronte al suo nuovo mondo popolare, la quale e esplicitamente descritta dallo stesso Verga nella parte introduttiva di Nedda. Semplificando e formulando le cose sarebbe lecito supporre che la Penisola, l' Italia continentale, simboleggiava per il Verga giovanile tutto quello che costituisce la vita salottiera o il mondo aristocratico-letterato, e da Nedda in poi la Sicilia, la sua terra, rapprensentera il suo mondo veristico, cioe il mondo popolare. In questo articolo l' A.intende di analizzare delle novelle piu importanti di Vita dei campi, mettendo in rilievo come la fase letteraria di ogni novella corrisponde alla coscienza o all' atteggiamento dello scrittore verso la Penisola e la Sicilia. In Cavalleria rusticana e nella Lupa, il Verga si allontana della stessa distanza dalla Sicilia e dalla Penisola, e rappresenta degli aspetti singolari della realta siciliana vista con l' immagine e il gusto della Penisola, dipingendoli con forti colori. La Cavalleri〓 rusticana e la Lupa corrispondono alla fase letteraria in cui il Verga taglia il mondo veristico dalla visione o dal gusto di quello salottiero. In Jeli il pastore e in Malpelo, la coscienza del Verga del contrasto tra la Penisola e la Sicilia, in fronte al mondo popolare subalterno, si e rarefatta, o, meglio, questo contrasto si e approfondito nella coscienza del Verga fino a formare un contrasto piu interno e trasformarsi in un contrasto fondamentale e universale ; quello tra l'esistenza di un individuo e la societa degli uomini. In Jeli il pastore e in Malpelo, non c'e piu un certo esibizionismo intravisto in Cavalleria rusticana e nella Lupa con cui il Verga taglia la sua terra dall' immagine della Penisola. La fase letteraria di Malpelo e Jeli il pastore indica il passaggio da un mondo veristico convenzionale ad un mondo favoloso e universale I sogni giovanili che il Verga romantico aveva nutrito verso le grandi citta della Penisola, una volta confrontati con la realta, cambiavano in una amara delusione verso il mondo borghese pieno di ipocrisia e vanita. In Jeli il pastore e in Malpelo, il Verga, scendendo nei piu bassi strati del mondo popolare della Sicilia, ci finisce per affermare la sua irremediabile disperazione per la medesima societa formata dagli uomini. Qui, il Verga si trova gia assolutamente isolato dalla Penisola e anche dalla Sicilia, e in questo stato psicologico ed emotivo di totale alienazione si identifica con i suoi Jeli e che sono al piu basso gradino della scala sociale e sono rifiutati ed esclusi dalla societa degli umili in cui vivono. Percio, il contrasto sociale in Jeli il pastore e in Malpelo e rappresentato sotto gli aspetti piu radicali, non solo come quello storico e sociale delle classi, ma piuttosto come quello tra l'esistenza di un individuo e la societa. Alla fine, l'A., riferendosi ai problemi della conversione letteraria del Verga, vuole accentuare l'esistenza del momento di totale alienazione da due mondi, il mondo salottiero e il mondo popolare, la quale il Verga dovette sormontare per arrivare alle opere della sua maturita.

The agriculture along Senegal River, especially on the right bank of Mauritanian territory side, depends on the flood inundation. The recession agriculture that uses the flood plain of the river after inundation is traditional style but gives unstable productivity. In addition, catastrophic damages on the farm field are given in the big rainy years. The authors propose that Lake R’kiz, the dry lake located on the right bank of Senegal River can be used as the retention pond for flood control and water reservoir for the agriculture in dry season. In this study, we tried to simulate the inundation on the flood plain under the current river system as a first step. Based on this numerical simulation model, the construction of the cannel from Senegal River to R’kiz Lake will be considered in further study. The digital elevation model (DEM) of the flood plain of the study site from upper Podor to Dhiama dam was obtained from the free database of Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM). The hydrological data used as the boundary condition on Dhiama dam and Podor are the observed data in 1999 when there was a big flood. iRIC that solves the 2 dimensional shallow water flow equation was applied to those conditions and result of the simulation was evaluated by the comparison with the water surface area estimated by satellite image analysis. The simulation result and satellite image analysis do not show the perfect agreement because of the assumptions for the unknown conditions of the river channel and hydraulic effect of Guier Lake on Senegal territory.

The lattice and grain boundary tracer diffusion coefficients D_PL^* and P_P^* of P in bcc iron, Fe–P binary alloys and Fe-0.1 at%P-M (M: Cr, Si, Mn, Mo and Ni) alloys were measured. There was a break in each of the D_PL^*−1⁄T and P_P^*−1⁄T lines at temperatures near and below the Curie temperature, respectively. It is considered that the anomalous breaks were caused by magnetic transformation in the bulk and grain boundary. The effects of Cr, Si and Ni on D_PL^* and P_P^* were small. Alloying with Mn increased D_PL^* and P_P^*, but alloying with Mo decreased them.

We present in this paper a project aiming to study dendritic electrodeposition in zero-gravity conditions. Following previous experiments performed in a drop tower facility, this project will include parabolic flight experiments on the CNES/Novespace zero-g Airbus. The objectives of this project will comprise different aspects: i) a study in zero-gravity conditions of the nucleation phenomena involved in electrodeposition, ii) a better understanding of the interplay between the formation of a passivation layer on the surface of a lithium electrode and the onset of dendritic growth, iii) a quantitative test of a model proposed by J.-N. Chazalviel to explain the formation of irregular electrodeposits. The project will involve numerical calculations and experiments performed on lithium electrodes and other metals (copper, for example).

We report in this paper the observation of a transition between two different dendritic growth mechanisms in the electrodeposition of a metal from a binary electrolyte. This transition is associated with a change in the current density regime. Our results, in particular concerning the dendritic growth velocities and ionic concentrations in the electrolyte, are well explained in terms of models previously proposed in the literature.

We study interlayer cation exchanges between potassium and cesium ions in micaceous clay minerals by ab initio calculations using the density functional theory. The calculations reveal that the cesium exchange is energetically favored when the exchange neighbor sites are preoccupied by cesium, otherwise it is not so. This tendency is explained by the simple halide model, suggesting that the interlayer distance adjusted by serially occupied ion radius has a key role in the exchange stability.

Two novel crystal protein genes, designated as cry39A and 39orf2, were cloned from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) subsp. aizawai Bun1-14. When sequenced, these genes were found to contain open reading frames for proteins of 75 kDa and 63 kDa, respectively. The Cry39A protein, which is a typical Bt crystal protein, revealed five conserved blocks (block1 to block5). The 39Orf2 protein showed high homology to the carboxyl half of the 130 kDa Cry proteins such as Cry4A and had three conserved blocks (block6 to block8). The cry39A and 39orf2 genes were expressed in an acrystalliferous B. thuringiensis strain. Cry39A formed bipyramidal crystal inclusions only in the presence of 39Orf2 and was toxic to mosquito larvae as a wild type strain Bun1-14. No crystal inclusion was observed when 39Orf2 was truncated.

The antimetastatic effect of Triton WR 1339 (TWR), a nonionic detergent, was evaluated in the rats bearing ascites tumor (Yoshida sarcoma or AH 66F). TWR did not inhibit the growth of primary tumor (ascites production). However, a marked inhibition of metastasis was observed in the lung and liver of rats treated with TWR. The results obtained suggest that TWR exerts antimetastatic effect before the entry of tumor cells into vascular channels. With other tests, it was found that TWR inhibits the release of tumor cells from tumor graft.

The transient mass transfer rate of Li⁺ ion caused by the electrochemical deposition and dissolution of Li metal in propylene carbonate (PC) and ionic liquid (IL) containing a lithium salt is numerically analyzed. The previous mesurements of transport properties such as diffusion coefficient of a lithium salt and electrolyte viscosity are used in the present calculation. The concentration profile of Li⁺ ion developed along electrode surface has been in-situ measured by holographic interferometry. The measurement values are reasonably compared with the calculations except for the apparent incubation period observed in the initial stage of electrochemical deposition and dissolution.

According to medical statistics, sacroiliac joints (SIJs) appear to be the source of low back pain in 15 - 30% of cases. The SIJs are located at the junction between the sacrum and the ilium, supported by strong ligaments and with low mobility. Due to unexpected external force or repeated impact, pain may arise from the SIJ region (SIJ dysfunction). The treatment to cure SIJ dysfunction includes nonsurgical approaches as well as surgery with implants (SIJ fixation). Previous studies have assessed the consequences of SIJ fixation, but no simulation study so far has been performed during walking. The SIJ is burdened with variant loads during walking. In this given study, walking conditions were replicated in a finite element model of the pelvis combined with 3D walking analysis data. The simulation mimicked two types of unilateral SIJ fixation: anterior fixation with a plate implant and screws (model A) and posterior fixation with a rod, a cage and screws (model P). Equivalent stress of the SIJ and the loading of the SIJ ligaments decreased in the fixed models. In these fixed pelves, the slight motion on the SIJ decreased. The reduction rates on equivalent stress, ligament loads and equivalent stress were low during the swing phase. In addition, the efficiency of fixations was mostly same on anterior and posterior fixations. It can be concluded that the stronger fixation reduces the loading but also may have a greater impairment effects on walking.
