Application of Al8B4C7 as a sintering additive of SiC was performed. Al8B4C7 was synthesized by calcining stoichiometric mixture of aluminum, B4C and carbon at 1800 oC for 2 h in Ar. The additive could be easily crushed into fine powder, and the powder did not have high reactivity with humidity. The densification of SiC was attained by spark plasma sintering at and above 1600oC for 20 min under 80 MPa pressure. Al8B4C7 was an efficient sintering additive of SiC.

Silicon nitride parts were joined with silicon slurry, followed by reaction bonding and post sintering. The joined silicon nitride showed average strength of 404 MPa. The result shows a potential of this joining technique, however, crack formation must be overcome.

Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) films have been deposited on silicon (100) substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering, using hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) targets. In this study, It was used various inert gases (Ar, Ne and He) during deposition process. Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FT-IR) has been employed for the investigation of the effect with inert gas addition. It was found that a using Ar-He mixture gas sample was deposited good adhesion.

The novel hemostatic agent was fabricated using hydroxyapatite (HAp), alginate (AG) and thermoplastic resin. The random copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide (EP) gel could be obtained by heating the starting materials at 100ºC for 185 min and then at 70ºC for 960 min, whereas the whisker-like HAp particles were prepared by the homogeneous precipitation method. The mixture of whisker-like (or nanometer-scaled) HAp particles and 2 mass% sodium alginate (HAp/AG ratio =1.0) was put into 1 mol dm-3 CaCl2 solution with a syringe or nebulizer in order to prepare spherical granules. The composite with HAp/AG granules and EP was effective for the resistance to bleed.

Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatie (HAp), which is similar in composition and crystal structure of natural bone, was successfully synthesized using commercial CaCO
3 and its related material waste, such as hen's eggshell, fish bone and scale, as calcium source. The synthesized HAp was then characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). FT-IR spectra show the characteristic peak of phosphate and hydroxyl groups. XRD results of samples reveal the characteristic peaks of HAp. The SEM images show sheet-like and rod-like for HAp prepared from CaCO
3 and hen's eggshell, respectively.

Plate-shaped particles of octacalcium phosphate (OCP) were hydrothermally treated with distilled water at 120-240 ºC for 3-24 h. Only the diffraction lines assigned to hydroxyapatite (HA) were detected by X-ray diffraction even after the treatment at the lowest temperature of 120 ºC for the shortest time of 3 h. In addition, plate-shape morphology originating from OCP was observed under this mildest treatment condition. However, plate-shaped particles split into small strip-shaped particles when the treatment temperature and time increased. Hydrothermal treatments of OCP in mild conditions are therefore useful to synthesize plate-shaped HA particles.

Hydroxyapatite whiskers (w-HA) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in order to develop HA whisker electrets for biomedical utilization. Whiskers synthesized via ACP were proved to be Ca-deficient HA with a Ca/P molar ratio of 1.53. The HPO42- in the Ca-deficient whiskers was responsible for the high ionic conductivity in the temperature range of 250 - 600ºC.

Comparing to other thin film fabrication techniques, sol-gel method is simple, cost-effective and be able to obtain more homogenous thin films. In this work, Gadolinium-doped Ceria (GDC) sol was prepared by citrate sol-gel technique using PEG600 as the polymerization agent. The effect of PEG600 concentration on the film morphology was studied. The SEM results showed that the GDC solution with the concentration of GDC : citric acid at 0.1 : 0.1M added with 0.025M PEG600 could give continuous appearance films with less crack morphology.

Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) thin films intercalated with various organic anionic dyes were prepared by immersion of sol-gel derived amorphous Al2O3-ZnO thin films in hot water containing organic dyes like Brilliant blue FCF, Fast green FCF, and Bordeaux S. In all the systems, extended interlayer spacing of the Zn-Al LDH was observed after immersion in distilled water with the organic salts in comparison to the LDH with carbonate anions, indicating that we have succeeded in direct formation of Zn-Al LDH films with various organic anionic dyes on the substrates.

Because of the damaging effects of UV-rays, many kinds of UV-shielding materials have been developed. Although semiconductor nanoparticles are used as inorganic UV-shielding materials, the comfort and covering capability of nanoparticles applied on skin are generally moderate. In order to improve the comfort and covering ability calcia-doped ceria (Ce1-xCaxO2-x) nanoparticles (donated as: CDC) were coated on the surface of plate-like potassium lithium titanate (K0.8Li0.27Ti1.73O4) (donated as: PLT) by a sol-gel coating method.
