Cerium oxide (ceria) was known as the material with oxygen storage and releasing capacity at high temperatures. Through this characteristic of ceria, we expected that the homogeneous dispersion of ceria in the porcelain body should be available for lightening of porcelain bodies. In this study, lightening of porcelain bodies was discussed by the addition of fine or coarse ceria particles. Lightening of porcelain bodies was achieved by introducing closed pores with the addition of fine ceria particles.

5 on the fabrication of SiC refractory using aqueous slip casting was studied. For preparing the SiC slurry with V
2O
5, it was the problem that the fluidity of SiC slurry was decreased with the addition of V
2O
5. ICP-AES measurements showed that the V concentration of the slurry was increased with increasing the milling time for preparing the slurry. Then we could improve the fluidity of the slurry by adding V
2O
5 just before slip casting. XPS measurements of SiC body with V
2O
5 showed that the V 2p
3/2 spectra was shift lower energy by firing at 1300ºC.

State of slurry for porcelain manufacture by the same preparation methods is changed according to season. However, since the factor of the seasonal variation of slurry was indefinite until now, it was difficult to keep slurry characteristics constant. So, in this study, in order to keep slurry characteristics constant, we were paying attention to the iron element in slurry. As a result, it discovered that the iron element increased when pottery stone slurry was heated. It was guessed that characteristic of slurry was changed by difference of equilibrium of iron element due to a different state according to grinding conditions or settling time. Moreover, it was guessed that the state of equilibrium of iron element was influenced by the creation state of the surface hydroxyl group of the pottery stone.

Yutori kyoiku, or a reduction in normal school hours, began in elementary and intermediate education ten years ago, and consequently the time available for experimental work in science courses has been significantly reduced. We have been holding a scientific experimentation course for elementary school children, using microscopes, during summer vacation for the past six years. Recently, a new educational guidance advisory has been issued to improve the scientific and mathematical abilities of children. Accordingly, we are cooperating with teachers in elementary and intermediate schools to provide advanced scientific education using ceramic materials.

It is important for college students to acquire the knowledge on the basic subjects. In addition to chemistry, physics, physical chemistry and chemical engineering, communication skill is thought to be an important part. The communication skill includes explaining orally what he/she is thinking, listening to the other students idea, combining these ideas of several students into one idea, performing the idea in an experiment, and so on. In our college, we started to have classes in which communication skill is exercised. In this talk, this different kind of classes is explained.

Ceramic tiles are products which aesthetic appearance plays a decisive role of success. In this paper we present an experimental method to evaluate the influence of luminance and contrast in the perception of spaces with ceramic wall tiles and floorings. We have employed three specific models: wood, marble and mosaic. These designs, widely used nowadays, are based on repetitive decorating modules and allow as to research interaction effects. Experiments are based on the presentation of digitally processed images of these models, aiming at quantifying the correlation between limit values of luminance and contrast and the perceptual effects. Fixing this relation we can modify different manufacturing parameters to assure the final product acceptation

The conditions for the fabrication of high-density silicon carbide (SiC) composite with vapor-grown carbon fiber (VGCF) addition were investigated by hot-pressing technique, using the sintering aids (8 mass% Al4C3 and 2 mass% B4C). The acid treatment was conducted in order to enhance the dispersibility of VGCF in the matrix, owing to the addition of COO- group to the surface of VGCF. Due to this treatment, the relative density and fracture toughness of SiC composite with 6 mass% VGCF addition hot-pressed at 1800 deg C for 1 h (pressure: 62 MPa) attained 99.0% and 5.7 MPa m1/2, respectively. The reduced length of pulled-out VGCF, compared to the case of SiC composite with as-prepared VGCF addition, was considered to be occurred by the enhanced friction between VGCF and SiC matrix, due to the acid treatment.

Resistance switching phenomena at Pt/STO3:Nb interface has been investigated by measuring temperature and frequency dependence of current-voltage and current-capacitance relationships. The resistance switching behavior was enhanced by decreasing temperature. C-V relationship measured at relatively low frequency indicated that the interfacial capacitance also shows hysteresis with change of bias voltage. These results indicated that the electric conduction even in low resistance mode exhibit non-metallic features.

2 for BNT single crystals grown at
Po
2 = 0.02 MPa. A lower
Pr of 23μC/cm

Preparation of PbTiO3 nano-crystals have been interesting as investigation of ferroelectric size effect, high quality ultra thin film growth and nano-scale storage media. In this study, formation of atomically flat surface of various sapphire substrates was investigated. The atomically flat surface with step-terrace structure on sapphire (001) and (012) substrates was obtained by annealing above 1000oC and 3min, however step bunching was occurred on (001) substrate above 1100oC. In the case of (110) substrates, atomically flat was obtained, however, step edge formed a zigzag line, and 2D controlled surface can be obtained. Pt layer for bottom electrode was also prepared on sapphire, and lateral growth Pt layer was obtained.

To investigate the lead-free piezoelectric materials, an evaluation system of the electric and piezoelectric properties at low temperature is required, because some prepared samples, such as BiFeO3, show high leakage current at room temperature. We have developed a light transmission type vacuum chamber system with the twin beam laser doppler vibrometer at wide temperature (-190 ~ +200 oC) and measurement frequency (max. 100kHz) range. In this study, we have investigated the ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics of the (1-x)BiFeO3-xBiCoO3(x = 0~0.3) thin films at liquid nitrogen temperature (-190oC) with high measurement frequency. As a result, we have gained the P-E hysteresis curve and butterfly shaped longitudinal displacement curve at -190oC with 5 kHz.

BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics are prepared by 2-step sintering, spark plasma sintering (SPS) and conventional sintering. In conventional sintering, the density and grain size of the ceramics increase with sintering temperature. In 2-step sintering, ceramics with more than 96% relative densities can be obtained by sintering at 1400 ˚C for 1 min in air atmosphere. Grain growth is suppressed in the ceramics prepared by 2-step sintering, compared with the conventional sintering. The average grain size of the BT ceramics obtained by 2-step sintered at 1300˚C for 1min. and subsequent annealed at 1150 ˚C for 15 h was 2.8 m. The ceramics exhibit a high relative dielectric constant exceeding 4000 at room temperature. The field-induced displacement of the BT ceramics by 2-step sintering is larger than that of the ceramics sintered conventionally.
