Aiming to control the volume fraction and the distribution of platelike grains in sintered alumina, a phase-field model is applied to find factors in anisotropic grain growth in powder compacts during sintering. Two-dimensional simulations of the microstructure evolution at the final stage of sintering are performed with and without the anisotropy of the interfacial energy taken into consideration. Anisotropic grain growth can be observed when the difference in interfacial energy between crystal orientations is large.

PbMg0.047Nb0.095Zr0.416Ti0.442O3 (PMNZT) films were fabricated using a spin-coating technique onto Pt(100)/MgO(100) substrates by metalorganic decomposition (MOD). The PMNZT films HIP-treated at 49-196 MPa were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and piezoelectric response microscopy (PFM). The PMNZT films HIP-treated are shown to be potential and reliable materials for piezo- and ferroelectric applications such as actuators and resonators.

In the present study, with special interests on the origin of the phase transition of ATiO
3 compound with tetragonal perovsikite structure under negative pressure, we made a series of analogous calculations of six perovskite titanates (ATiO

In order to investigate the crystal structures in detail, we mesured powder neutron diffraction patterns and then performed crystal structure analysis based on Rietveld method.

Due to high remanent and excellent polarization fatigue characteristic, Bi

4Si
3O
12 (BSO)-addition, and investigated their properties, local and electronic structures and ferroelectric performances. From
P-
E hysteresis measurements, it was confirmed that
Pr increased and
Ec decreased by adding BSO. Local structure analysis indicates that such improvements of ferroelectric performances result from higher local distortion of (Ti, Si)O
6 octahedra. From the electronic density distribution, it is suggested that Ti-O bond became stronger by the Pr substitution and BSO addition.

In order to find relationships among the atomic structure, electronic structure, and defect energetics, [001](310sigma5 grain boundaries (GBs) of SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 were investigated by using first principles calculations and high resolution STEM. It was found that the rigid-body translations of one grain with respect to the other is indispensable to obtain the stable GB structure, and the rigid body translation plays an important role to reduce the structural distortions, such as dangling-bonds and strains. Although the vacancy formation energy depends on the atomic site, the defect energetics at the GB was found to be similar to that in the bulk. It was also found that Ti vacancy is more sensitive to the structural distortions than Sr and O vacancies. This would be caused by the difference in the bonding character of Ti-O and Sr-O. Through this study, the atomic structures of the [001](310)sigma5 GBs of SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 were determined, and the characteristic electronic structures and defect energetics of those GBs were identified.

A Bleustein-Gulyaev-Shimizu (BGS) wave with only a shear-horizontal (SH) displacement has the property of complete reflection at the free edge of a piezoelectric ceramic substrate. It is considered that small-sized resonator filters without reflectors consisting of grating fingers can be realized by exploiting this characteristic of the BGS wave. We have realized BGS wave filters by solving many technical problems about manufacturing process, substrate material, chip design and so on.

Pb-Ti-O single-crystal nanowires having an unknown precise crystal structure called PX-phase were analyzed using micro x-ray beam at SPring8. The nanowires were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis method and were dispersed on the substrate. The dispersed nanowires were mapped by scanning a micro x-ray beam, which enables us to focus the x-ray beam on a single nanowire. The x-ray diffraction of the single wire indicates that the longitudinal of the nanowire is perpendicular to the (001) plane, and the lattice spacing of (100) and (010) is identical.

The 1-D photonic crystal composed of Multilayered Epitaxial film was fabricated using RF magnetron sputtering. Barium Strontium titanate ((Ba,Sr)TiO3) and magnesium oxide (MgO) layers with the thickness of about 40-80 nm were alternately deposited. The thickness of each layer was estimated by stylus surface profile measurement and ellipsometry measurement, and then the optimal sputtering times of SrTiO3 and MgO were determined. For the 1-D photonic crystal with 8 layers, the photonic band gap was successfully observed using a visible light spectrometer. Likewise, Strontium titanate (SrTiO3) and MgO multilayers were fabricated and measured.

Pmax. It was found that the integrated X-ray intensity increased rapidly around
Pmax because electrons are emitted from a cylinder by a photoelectric effect mainly.

Recently, a high-performance gas sensor which can detect flammable gases such as H
2 with high sensibility is required. On the other hand, the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process is known as a simple and easy process for preparing a porous thin film on a complex formed substrate. In this study, in order to fabricate a combustion type high-performance gas sensor, the porous titania thin films loading Pd and Pt fine particles were prepared by using an EPD and a subsequent photo deposition process. The microstructure and the sensor characteristic to H
2 gas of the obtained porous titania thin films were examined.

Most of gas sensors are "surface type" gas sensors that utilize only changes in physical properties near the surface of grains. In this paper, the concept of "non-surface type" gas sensors that utilize changes in physical properties throughout the entire grain is proposed. In particular, we focused on a resistive oxygen sensor as one type of "non-surface type" gas sensor, and achieved notable performance with high-speed response to the order of milliseconds. Furthermore, in order to achieve highly sensitive and highly selective "non-surface type" gas sensors, a new sensor material was developed consisting of alternating layers at the molecular level of an inorganic layer. Aldehyde gases were detected selectively by appropriate nanostructural design of the new material.

We examine synchrotron XRD measurements of CaFe1-xCoxAsF and SrFe1-xCoxAsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) from 30 K to 300 K, and demonstrate that the structural phase transitions take place at ~120 K for unsubstituted CaFeAsF and ~180 K for unsubstituted SrFeAsF, as observed in unsubstituted LaFeAsO. The differences of the refined crystal structures between CaFeAsF and SrFeAsF are discussed in relation to properties of the superconductivity. We suggest that CaFeAsF whose FeAs4 tetrahedron is close to regular one is a promising candidate for higher-Tc superconductor.

A flux of oxide ions of solid electrolyte at a grain boundary was correlated to the difference of activity (a
r) of oxide ions within two adjacent grains with different curvature at a given electric field. The flux leads to two types of conductivity : increased conductivity (σ
i (+)) and decreased conductivity (σ
i (-)) with decreasing grain size. Both the conductivities reach a maximum or minimum value at r = r
c where a
r = 1 (for r > 0) or a
r = a
02 ( for r < 0, a
0 is the activity for r = ∞). As a result, total conductivity σ(t) (=(σ
i (+)+σ
i (-))/2) is expressed as a curve of second degree of reciprocal grain size (1/r) and reaches a maximum value at r = r
c.

Effects of cation doping into La- and Si-sites of the apatite-type lanthanum silicate, La9.33Si6O26 on their electrical properties were investigated. Since it has been known that a slight Al or Mg doping into its Si-site is effective to enhance its ionic conductivity, dense pellets of La9.33+x(Si6-yAly)O26+1.5x-0.5y and La9.33+x(Si6-yMgy)O26+1.5x-y were fabricated and their electrical conducting properties were studied. In each case, the maximum electrical conductivity was found around x = 0.67 and y = 0.2. In addition, system of (La9.67M0.33)(Si5.8Mg0.2)O26.3+a (M; La, Y, Ce) was also investigated. It was found that the optimization of excess oxygen content, and the vacancy creation into SiO4 tetrahedra are key issues to improve its conductivity.
