Phenolic resins are used in a wide range of fields due to the high-grade properties. In particular, alkaline resole resins are most often produced as wood adhesives, and the demand for them is increasing year by year. Behind this are the high durability and low formaldehyde emissions. This paper describes the basic characteristics and reactions of phenolic resins, as well as recent research trends and future challenges.
