The viscoelastic behaviour of 20% protein dope was measured in order to obtain the relationships between its rheological properties, spinnability and the strength of the spun fiber during the spinning process. It was found that the frequency dependence curves of storage shear modulus (G') and loss modulus (G'') shifted progressively from the low frequency side to the high frequency side as NaOHconcentration increased in the 20% dope. The intervals between 20% dope prepared with different alkali concentrations at 50°C becamewider and wider as the maturation time of the dope increased. A rigid gel was formed when the dope was prepared with less than 1.0% NaOH (pH 12.20). From G'' and relaxation spectra, it was suggested that these dopes had two groups of relaxation time in connection with entanglement slippage in the molecules.
