The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is a ligand-gated ion channel residing in the postsynaptic membrane. Three-dimensional structure of this molecule has been examined by frozen-hydrated electron microscopy of tubular vesicles in which receptors are organised in a helical array. The receptor has a tripartite structure, sharply partitioned at the level of phospholipid head groups. The structure of the ion channel is discussed in relation to the amino acid sequence.
