The study is based upon the investigation carried out among 705 stallions, brood-mares, and their offsprings selected from those having pedigrees extending over three generations in the HIDAKA STUD-FARM, HOKKAIDO.
(1) This investigation shows that 85% of those horses have white facial markings, 63.6% have white patterns on legs, and 8.2% have no white marking at all.
(2) As a rule, the bigger, the white, facial mark ings of horses, the bigger their patterns on legs also, and those with small, white facia l markings usually have either small white patterns on legs or none at. all. The relat ion between these characteristics seems to be almost positive.
(3) The hereditary rate of white facial markings is higher than that of white patterns on legs.
(4) The white facial marking has three factors …W, H, and I, which seem to be quantitative factors. Among them, an equation "W=H=1=1" seems to be set up, though W seems a little more predominant than H or I.
(5) So far as the post experiments are concerned, it seems that these conclusions may safely be applied to pedigrees of horses.
(6) It seems, more over, that white spotting, and white markings are inheritable as dominant character, though this leaves soma room for further consideration.
