Stiffeners are essential members of ship hull structures composed of stiffened panels,and their scantlingformulaeagainstlateralpressureareimportantfordesigningsafeandrationalhullstructures. Intypicalscantlingformulaeofclassificationsocieties,thereductioninthefullyplasticmomentdueto theshearstressisnotdirectlyconsideredinthecurrentdesign.Inthisstudy,wefirstderivedasimple formulation ofthe shear stress effect with the simultaneous action of an axial stress under agiven stiffenerconfiguration,and showedthat the reduction ofthe fullyplastic moment canbe calculated usingthreenon-dimensionalparameters.Basedontheformulation,wediscussedhoweachparameter contributes to the fully plasticmoment as well as theconditionunder which the shear stress can beeffectively neglected. Subsequently,we used the finite element analysis (FEA) based on the residualdeflectioncriterion,therebyverifyingthevalidityofthetheoreticalproposals.Finally,weproposedascantling formula,rationally taking account of the shear stresseffect.
