An arteriovenous malformation is a direct communication between an artery and a vein, through which the blood flows the capillary circulation. A case of arteriovenous malformation of the mandible, diagnosed by different radiological examinations, is presented in this paper.
A 13-year-old boy was referred to our clinic with the chief complaint of swelling in the left cheek. The sound of blood flow could be heard and palpitation on the external carotid artery and facial vein was felt. Panoramic and PA view showed a well-defined multilocular radiolucency in the left mandible. CT showed the expansion of the blood vessels connected with this lesion. MRI revealed the flow void phenomenon in the expanded blood vessels. Conventional angiography disclosed the definite feeder, drainer and nidus of the arteries. At present we consider that it was an indispensable examination for the diagnosis of this condition. Such cases should be diagnosed by using the successful radiograhpic examinations.
