In this study, holmium (Ho) complexes have been prepared by chelating β-diketone ligands with Ho, a lanthanide element with excellent magnetic properties. The polarized optical microscopy images of the Ho complexes showed dark-field images, and X-ray diffraction measurements suggested that cubic liquid crystal were formed at a wide range of temperature including room temperature. Furthermore, the obtained materials responded to the movement of a magnet at room temperature, and SQUID measurements showed that it is paramagnetic, indicating the successful fabrication of magnetic cubic liquid crystals.
