The author previously reported that the bactericidal action of sulfonamides is magnified by oxidizing agents and contrarily decreased by reducing agents. In the investigation of this section, the bacterial effect of the following oxidized derivatives (p-hydroxglaminophenylsulfonamide, p-nitrophenylsulfonamide, β-phenylazo α-α-diaminopyridin, azoxydiphenyl-disulfonamide) supplied by the pharmaceutic Department of Kyoto Imperial University, was studied.
In this work, author has not found any oxidized derivative which is more effective than sulfonamide under the compounds listed above. Thus it remains yet unknown, what sort of the oxidized derivative of sulfonamide is effective. But the fact, in which the bacterial action of the drug is intensified by adding the amount of perhydroxygen causing no inhibiting action against the multiplication of microorganisms, and contrarily of the oxidized derivative of the drug decreased, leads to the conclusion that the chemical processes which convert the drug into its oxidized derivatives act on the microorganisms as germicidal.
