Since titanium has excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, it has been widely used as biomaterial in fields of orthopedics and dental surgery. It is believed that the thin oxide film formed on titanium plays important roles in interfacial phenomena such as corrosion and bio-tissue reactions. The presenters have investigated the chemical composition and structure of surfaces polished with abrasives of silicon carbide and ferric oxide. The aim of the present study was to investigate the surface composition and structure of titanium polished with colloidal silica and chromic oxide.
In conclusion, choromic oxide is liable to contaminate titanium surface even under low pressure, while colloidal silica creates a mirror-like and chemically clean surface even under high pressure.
