This study clarifies the impact of the exogenous shock of the COVID-19 pandemic on household food consumption in Japan. We present theory-consistent hypotheses, measure the food demand system, and compare elasticities before and after the pandemic outbreak. The results verify the hypothesis that the expenditure and own-price elasticities (absolute value) change less for at-home meals and more for eating out.
