In this research, we investigated the effect of hexane contained in solvent extraction residue on the mass of oil produced by hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of the residue. After the solvent extraction of hydrocarbon from Botryococcus braunii, extraction residue is generated. Besides extracted hydrocarbon, the extraction residue should be used, and so biocrude oil production by HTL of the residue was investigated. Amount of the extracted hydrocarbon and biocrude oil produced by HTL of the residue was not significantly different from that of biocrude oil from the algae before solvent extraction. In addition, the extraction residue contained a little of residual hexane because it is difficult to evaporate and recover the hexane completely. The weight ratio of biocrude oil tended to increase as the mass of hexane in residue increased. Moreover, the weight ratio of solid residue tended to decrease as the hexane increased and that of aqueous products did not differed significantly.
