Teachers’ subjective turnover intention tends to vary by gender and other attributes, and the subject
matter they teach. This study aimed to identify the types of turnover intentions of home economics
teachers and explore differences in the factors associated with their increased turnover intention through
the factor analysis of a questionnaire survey of 233 regular junior high school home economics teachers.
Three factors were identified as types of turnover intention: “difficulties due to the special nature of home
economics teaching,” “responsibility for work and family,” and “age, health concerns, and change in
interest.” Multiple regression analysis was conducted with the scores for these three factors as dependent
variables in order to clarify the influencing factors of each type of turnover intention. It was found that
the number of class hours was associated with “difficulties due to the special nature of home economics
instruction,” and age was associated with “age and changes in health concerns and interests.” Moreover,
the results suggest that excessive teaching load lowers the self-efficacy of home economics instruction
and increases teachers’ intention to leave the profession.
