Kretschmer found three basic types of temperamental pattern through clinical observations and experiments on correlations among many personality spheres. Each sphere in each type was said to have specific functional correlations. Then, if we use a questionnaire including many personality spheres and the factor analysis, can we extract the same types as Kretschmer's?
For this purpose, we constructed a questionnaire consisting of 98 items selected from six major personality areas; cognitive, temperamental, motivational, way of life, social intelligence and the sixth area (residual traits).
Ss in this research were 75 undergraduate male students of Chiba University enrolled in Introductory Psychology and 47 male industrial foremen aged mainly from 40 to 50. The Ss responded to 98 true-or-false type questions. The collected data were analyzed by the principle component analysis and rotated by the Geomax method.
Results: We obtained 7 factors for both groups. Those seven factors were designated as below.
Industrial foremen group
1. light-headed-warm (Z)
2. confidence-active (E)
3. excitable-active (Z)
4. cheerful-sanguine (Z)
5. active-extravert (Z)
6. orderliness-responsible (E)
7. depressive-close minded (S)
Students group
1. unstable-oversensitive (S)
2. active-excitable (Z)
3. orderliness-responsible (E)
4. sensuous-optimistic
5. irritable-egoistic
6. stable-extravert (Z)
7. warm-cooperative (S)
We found that, on the whole, these seven factors for each group corresponded with Kretschmer's three basic types, Zyklothymie (Z), Schizothymie (S) and Epileptic character (E).
Moreover it was also found that two new factors showing egoistic and optimistic tendencies in the student group.
Right : In the questionnaire of 98 items which were selected from 6 major personality areas: Cognitive, temperamental, motivational, way of life, social intelligence and the residual area, we found 7 factors in each of 2 groups consisting of 47 industrial foremen and 75 college students. Those 7 factors in the industrial foremen group and 5 factors in the student group were corresponded to Kretschmer's 3 basic types. The 2 new factors found in the student group were named optimistic and irritable-egoistic respectively.
