However, the EFI that Shapiro manipulated may have been confounded with another factor: Whether the partner of allocation was present or not. The first purpose of this study was to refine the effect of EFI on reward allocation in a dyad. The second purpose was to distinguish between the effect of EFI and the effect of the presence of a partner of allocation.
The procedure was the same in Experiment I and Experiment II. However, the partner of allocation was present in the same room in Experiment I but not in Experiment II. EFI and level of input were manipulated in a 2×2 factorial design. The subjects were 64 female undergraduates and were randomly assigned to each condition (n=16per cell) in each experiment. A subject was brought into the laboratory with a confederate who served as her partner. After the dyad finished the task in 15min, they were informed of the scores they earned and the amount of the joint reward (1010 yen). The allocator, as determined by fake lot, divided this joint reward. The percentage of the reward allocated to herself (allocator) was the main dependent variable. Under the EFI condition the dyad were told that they would have a meeting after allocation of the reward. Under the No EFI condition, however, they were told that they could leave immediately after the allocation. The level of input was manipulated by providing false feedback on the number of scores which each person had earned on the experimental task. The high input subject scored 327 points (65%) for a total of 503 points and the low input subject scored 176 points (35%).
The results showed that high input subject allocated less reward to herself in the EFI condition than in the No EFI condition when the partner was present (Experiment I). However, when the partner was not present (Experiment II), there was no difference between the EFI condition and the No EFI condition in the mean percentage of reward allocated to herself. On the other hand, in a low input condition there was no significant difference in mean percentage of allocation between the EFI condition and the No EFI condition in both experiments. It was also found that subjects allocated less reward to themselves in Experiment I than in Experiment II.
The result of high input subjects in Experiment II differs from Shapiro's findings. The results were discussed in terms of self-presentation. It is suggested that the interpretation of self-presentation is valid only in the situation where the partner is aware of the mode of allocation.
