A rare case of primary osteosarcoma of the lung is reported. An 83 year-old man was admitted to the Japanese Red Cross First Nagoya Hospotal because of right chest discomfort in June 1981. A chest X-ray film revealed a large mass measuring 10×8cm in the right mid-lung field. A chest X-ray film taken eight months before admission showed no tumor. Bone scintigraphy revealed abnormal uptake by the tumor. The tumor grew rapidly and bloody pleural effusion appeared. The patient died of respiratory failure in October 1981.
The autopsy revealed that a large off-white, hypervascular tumor measuring 14×10×10cm had occupied most of the right lung and had invaded as far as the pleura. No metastasis was found. Microscopically, the tumor was highly cellular and composed of spindle-shaped cells and ovoid cells. There was also formation of osteoid, cartilage and bone.
