In this paper, a new linear suspension actuator with a suspension control law based on a novel energy-based optimal control method is proposed for self-powered active suspension systems. Since the effective inertia of such actuators along suspension motion axis directly affects the suspension performance, proposed actuator is specifically designed to reduce this effective inertia. Anti-parallel relief valves are utilized in design aiming more effective shock input force suppression. Hybrid actuator is controlled by a novel optimal control method. Overall system is evaluated by a hardware-in-the-loop simulation. Results reveal the superior performance characteristics of the proposed hybrid actuator and suspension control law both for random roughness road and smooth road with a road bump.
