A Study Toward Establishing a Continuous Nursing Care System for Living Kidney Donors：Final Report

【Purpose】The purpose of this study is to examine ideal continuous nursing care for living kidney donors by integrating the surveys done in three stages.【Subjects and Methods】In the first stage, a fact-finding survey on nursing care for living kidney donors was conducted targeting nurses. In the second stage, those nurses were surveyed on issues in nursing care of living kidney donors. For statistical analysis, IBM SPSS ver.19 was used；a content analysis was carried out regarding the issues in nursing care. In the third stage, a survey on nursing care needs was conducted targeting living kidney donors. I conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed them qualitatively and inductively.【Results】Nurses are often required to do double duty, and thus, approximately 90 percent of the nurses responded that there were problems with the nursing care for living kidney donors. The issues included lack of long-term moral support, continuous nursing care, and the confirmation and guarantee of their voluntary commitment. The donors’ needs in nursing care included a consultation service, moral support, lifelong follow-ups, and opportunities to share their experiences.【Conclusions】To confirm and guarantee voluntary commitment, as well as lifelong holistic care, it is desirable that we assign fulltime nurses to provide nursing care for donors. The narratives of the experienced kidney donors can be utilized to help potential donors in decision-making. It is necessary to provide donors with opportunities to share their experiences in order to promote defining the meaning of kidney donation. Survey findings revealed that when there is negative change in the recipient’s condition, both physical and psychological, after discharge, the same can happen to the donor as well. Therefore, that is the crucial time to make contact with the donor.
