In recent years, maintaining oral health has been increasingly recognized as a form of disease prevention for people of all ages, not just the elderly. Preserving oral function throughout one's life is crucial for overall health maintenance. This study aimed to examine the effects of desires of thinness among female college students on oral local immune function, total autonomic nervous system activity, and psychosocial stress. The results showed that when female college students perceived their body shape to be larger than their actual BMI and expressed a desire to lose weight, they exhibited several changes: decreased overall autonomic nervous system activity, an increased psychological stress response, and a related reduction in the secretion of salivary HBD-2 (Human-β-defensin-2), which is an indicator of local oral immune function.
