This paper describes the technologies for improvement in safety and comfort of the E235 Series prototype, which is intended to introduce to Tokyo metropolitan area by JR-East as a next-generation commuter train. For safety improvement, installation of roll bars as a side collision resistant structure, an offset collision resistant structure, and the structure offering improvement for the critical wind speed of overturn have been adopted and also installation of INTEROS, a new train information management system. have been conducted. For comfort improvement, installation of free space to all the vehicles, clarification of free space and priority seats, and provision of enhancement of information providing service by digitization of intra-train advertisement.
