Metabolites can be regarded as end products precisely defining the net result of all cellular regulation processes, and therefore, ultimately determining the phenotype.
Several thousand metabolites may appear simultaneously in a given plant species. By use of GC/TOF technology, over 1,000 metabolites are currently detectable from a single sample. This data is automatically exported into data bases, where they are compiled and cleaned for large scale analysis. Select results are shown for the analysis of 1,000 leaf extracts of 25 Arabidopsis genotypes, and 2,300 tuber extracts of 10 potato plant genotypes from a German GMO field trial, with emphasis on pattern recognition and statistical analysis.
In addition, recent advances in complementary LC/MS based methods are presented, from fast de novo identification routines for novel natural compounds by ion trap and QTOF technology to better separation using capillary silica-based monolithic columns, which almost reach the peak capacity of GC based methods.
