The purpose of this study was to propose a curriculum management approach for the development of throwing ability in elementary physical education. The following two tasks were set.
Task 1: To organize content related to the acquisition of throwing ability in elementary school physical education on the basis of the characteristics of throwing ability and the content of instruction in each area related to throwing.
Task 2: To consider effective instructional plans through collaboration in each area on the basis of content related to the acquisition of throwing ability, as organized in Task 1.
First, to address Task 1, we systematically organized the content of instruction related to the acquisition of throwing ability in elementary school physical education through an analysis of the content of the Physical Education section of the Courses of Study for Elementary Schools and the Health and Physical Education section of the Courses of Study for Junior High Schools. Then, on the basis of the discussion in Task 1, we examined an approach for devising an annual instructional, plan for the development of throwing ability from a cross-disciplinary viewpoint, to address Task 2.
Through this study, the roles of each motor area and patterns of throwing ability (“distance throwing,” “accurate throwing,” and “coordination”) were identified for the development of throwing ability. In addition, we proposed devising an annual teaching plan that takes into consideration the sequence of units in each motor area (“track and field,” “physical exercise,” “ball game”), and identified a new direction of practice for the development of throwing ability. A major issue that should be addressed in future studies is the verification of the theory proposed in the present study through repeated practice and investigation at elementary schools.
