The dream of the red chamber is a famous classical novel which was written in China Qing era. It drawn the life and love story of the noble youth. This research aims to analyse the characters in this novel, specifically the characteristics of color seen in their costumes. The conclusion can be given as follows : (1) The colors of formal and casual costumes have different images, such as : 'noble' in formal costumes, and 'elegance', 'fascinating', 'simple' in casual costumes. (2) The colors of the male formal gawn's and females formal trousers or skirt's, are combinations of vivid, bright and deep colors. Sleeveless coat usually used dark colors. (3) The colors of the casual costumes, are combinations of dull, bright and light colors.
