In this paper, we report an empirical study on the effects of the orientation of a large shared screen in a face-to-face meeting setting. We have compared two version of the system : one with a vertical large shared screen (like a traditional white board) and another with a horizontal one (like a meeting table). The latter system, named "Fushigi-Kokuban" (meaning "magical blackboard"), is designed based on the concept evolved from an 'acting out' workshop. In this experiment, collaborative design by four groups, each of which consists of four test participants, is conducted using drawing software on both types of the shared screen, and the utterance and figures drawn by participants are compared. The experimental results indicate that the horizontal large shared screen is more suitable for a meeting targeted for a creative process.
