This research is a qualitative piece that seeks to define improvisation in the light of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of science at the basic educational level in Ghana, to identify what can be improvised as well as the need for improvisation. The unavailability and high cost of instructional materials call for immediate attention and solution, appropriate alternatives are therefore needed to cater to the scarcity of these resources in order of improving the teaching and learning of science. Improvisation is the appropriate method of solving this alarming situation in Ghana since the curriculum has given a room for improvisation. Instructional materials are defined in this study, their impact on teaching and learning, what can be improvised, factors to be considered and guide when improvising for science lessons, also a few recommendations were made to promote improvisation in science to enhance teaching and learning.
