Little is explicitly described NOS ("Nature of Science") aspects in Japanese science textbooks because Japanese K12/education guidelines do not contain the NOS concepts. There are however many descriptions of relations between science and society, etc., which are related to NOS, in Japanese science textbooks. This study examined whether typical descriptions of evolution, such as definitions of evolution, evidence for evolution, history of evolutionary theory, the evolution of finches beaks, and Hardy Weinberg Law in Japanese biology textbooks could be used as examples for explaining NOS aspects. Addition of some information to those 5 descriptions enabled them to explain 9 NOS aspects, which were "Empirical," "Inferential," "Creative," "Theory-driven," "Tentative," "Scientific theories," "Scientific laws," "Social dimensions of science," and "Social and cultural embeddedness of science."
