While traditional science approaches emphasized science content, the NextGeneration Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize science and engineering practices and call for students to explain phenomena in science and design solutions to problems in engineering. The NGSS science and engineering practices directly involve students in how science is done andhelp students better understand how scientists and engineers do their work. The NGSS emphasis on practices keeps students actively engaged through sensemaking investigations. The NGSSrepresent a shift from traditional science learning and require shifts in K-12 classroominstruction that can be challenging for teachers to implement. I was a member of the NGSS writing team and have over 30 years of experience as a middle school science teacher andteacher mentor. I will describe how NGSS classroom instruction impacts student learning and share real-world insights for implementing the NGSS.
