A questionnaire survey was administered to 305 participants at a university in Kitakyushu in September 2023. The survey content included respondents’ attributes; place attachment; communication with neighbors; local experiences, including regional education in elementary and junior schools; and family and personal local employment preferences. Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were applied to the survey responses to examine the relationship between place attachment and the respondents’ local employment preferences. The results indicated that engaging in local experiences enhanced place attachment. This, in turn, increased the students’ desire to work locally. Furthermore, it is important for fostering place attachment to learn about local traditions and culture, and participation in hands-on activities in the community from elementary school onward. In the future, local residents and educational institutions are expected to collaborate in developing local education programs.
