Abstract

New towns around megacity and their rapid emergence are being recognized as a significant change taking place in China. The phenomenon leads to more opportunities for sustainable development of the megacities. On the other hand, the process of new towns emerging is causing increasingly serious problems such as jobs-housing imbalance. Thus, the need for generating a profound understanding of new towns is evident to tap synergistic policy measures to tackle the challenges of future urban development. The major objective of this article is to analyze the issues and problems related to transportation system of new towns in key stages to discover a path of sustainable development in the future. This article synthesizes existing information and knowledge on new towns in the case of Shanghai, China.
