A new art movement called kinetizm (“kineticism”) developed in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 70s. Kinetic artists introduced technology and various other means of depicting motion in their work that had never been used in the field of art before. Members of kinetizm also exhibited their work at various science expositions. The rise of Soviet kinetic art corresponded with the development of space science in the Soviet Union. This paper discusses the Soviet kinetic art movement, focusing on the influence of the philosophy of Russian cosmism and the theory and practice of avant-garde art in the early 20th century. Although the philosophy of cosmism and avant-garde art was officially prohibited by the Soviet state, kinetic artists secretly reflected these ideas in their works exhibited in public space. In the Soviet era, art was divided into two fields: official art and non-official art. However, the anthropologist Alexei Yurchak criticized the binary categorization of Soviet culture—official and non-official, oppression and resistance — and insisted that Soviet people lived in a complicated and paradoxical situation that he named “vne” (outside). Based on the Yurchak’s idea, I will discuss how the movement of kinetizm was practiced in the field of “vne,” resulting in what cannot be categorized either as official art or non-official art.
