This paper describes an “English for Teaching Purposes (ETP)” program implemented on a trial basis in an English-teacher-training curriculum. The ETP program is a program in which pre-service English teachers (including elementary school “foreign language” teachers) practice English language skills required for their professional duties, which are defined by the ability to perform “target tasks” (i.e., real-world tasks for English teachers). In this study, four tasks, i.e., (i) small talk, (ii) oral introduction of the target grammar, (iii) questions making and (iv) paraphrasing/rewriting into plain English, were targeted, and the following procedures were used: 1) Practice 1 (practicing the target task), 2) Reflection 1 (viewing a model performance and confirming key points in carrying out the task), 3) Practice 2 (practicing the target task again using a different material), 4) Reflection 2 (doing self-evaluation and confirming additional key points), and 5) Performance Task (submitting the performance task and receiving feedback from the instructor). This paper also presents the researcher’s reflection on the implemented ETP program (mainly about its outcomes and challenges) based on evaluations by the participants and the submitted performance tasks.
