This study was designed to examine the effects of oral and silent reading of Japanese as a second language on memory of surface form and meaning content of sentences. Thirty-two of Chinese or Korean native speakers learning Japanese, who reached more than the second level of JLPT, participated in the experiment in which rapidness of phonological coding of words was operating as another independent variable. The performances of oral free-recall test of sentences were used as dependent variables. The main results were as follows: (a)oral reading has higher performance on memory of surface form of Japanese sentences regardless of rapidness of phonological coding of words, (b)the learners who can rapidly code phonologically Japanese words were superior on memory performance of meaning content of sentences regardless of oral or silent reading, (c) memory performance of oral reading in meaning content was not different from that of silent reading.
