It was on Dec. 18, 1854 that Kierkegaard’s discourse on the late Bishop Mynster appeared in a newspaper. It was the beginning of his attack upon “Christendom”. This treatise deals with the background and the development of this conflict.
The relation between Kierkegaad and Mynster is considered first. Kierkegaard came into conflict with “Christendom” through the opposition to Mynster.
Second, I deal with the belief of Kierkegaard that was to cause him to take arms against “Christendom”. He considered martyrdom to be the essence of Christianity and insisted that a Christian should be a martyr.
Third, I follow the further process and the denoument of this conflict.
Judging from his service to “the Absolute” and his resulting death, it can be said that he also lived and died a martyr.
