Comparative investigation on characteristic volatile constituents of the marine green algae by capillary GC and GC-MS showed the following:
(1) Hexahydrofarnesyl acetone was identified as a characteristic volatile compound in the marine green algae.
This compound was not detected in other marine brown algae and red algae, we in-vestigated.
(2) Hexadecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, and phytol were identified as the common main volatile compounds in the marine algae.
