Diethoxycarbonyl-pantothenic ethyl ester (DEPaE) was prepared by Fujimoto, as a new fat-soluble ester of pantothenic acid (PaA), stabler than salts of PaA and its biological activity was compared with equimolar Ca salt of PaA (CaPa) on rats : DEPaE, when orally given to young rats on PaA-deficient diet, was proved to be fully active as PaA in both the weight gain and the increase of CoA level of liver. Activity of both phenylalanine-4-hydroxylase and L-tyrosine 2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase of liver was shown to be higher in DEPaE and CaPa groups than in deficient group. DEPaE is easily converted into PaA by mild alkaline hydrolysis and from our preliminary experiment, DEPaE was fully utilized in animals as PaA.
