The biosynthesis of 6-methylmercaptopurinylcobamide (MPC) and its coenzyme from using the resting cells of P. arabinosum, their physicochemical properties and biological as well as biochemical activities are dealt with. MPC obtained by incubation of Factor B and 6-methylmercaptopurine with the resting cells of P. arabinosum was 13% of the total corrinoids formed. The UV-visible absorption spectra of MPC and MPC coenzyme showed absorption maxima at 295,361,515 and 545 mμ and at 261,295,375 and 458 mμ, respectively. Microbiological activities of MPC were 53% and 7% of those of cyanocobalamin for Escherichia coli 215 and Ochromonas malhamensis, respectively. It is also interesting that MPC coenzyme has about one twentieth activity of cobalamin coenzyme in enzymatic 1,2-propanediol dehydration.
