Recently, the number of people with obesity has been increasing all over the world. Since obesity is a major risk factor as some diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, much research has been focused on anti-obesity. We have investigated anti-obesity effects of tocotrienols (T3s), which can be obtained from the daily food.
Vitamin E is a lipophilic vitamin with a side chain on the chroman ring. Vitamin E is classified into tocopherols and T3s by the presence or absence of double bond in the side chain. In this article, we mainly describe our study on anti-obesity effects of T3s.
Co-treatment of mice with a high-fat diet and T3s significantly inhibited body weight gain, an increase in serum cholesterol concentration and fatty liver as compared to treatment of mice with a high-fat diet alone. On the other hand, T3s did not exert their anti-obesity effect when obesity was induced by treating with the diet rich in not only fat but also sucrose. Based on these findings, we are investigating the inhibitory effect of tocotrienols on intestinal fat absorption.
We show the detailed results of these investigations in this article.
